• What is Ujor festival?
  • Is Ujor festival really the "New Yam festival"?

Ujor festival is not New Yam festival. It is Ere-ononu, that is festival which brings up new yams. Ujor is festival of war when Agila people commemorate their victories in battle. Reason the Ikpa dance by the Itsogwas practicalises war steps.

Ujor festival is not New Yam festival. It is Ere-ononu that is festival which brings up new yams. Ujor is festival of war when Agila people commemorate their victories in battle. Reason the Ikpa dance by the Itsogwas practicalises war steps. I was with Chief Phillip Agbese Ongazi in 1988 with some Journalists when he said Ujor may be turned to new yam festival. Then I told that this might result in spiritual implication on Agila people since every festival carry spiritual significance at every season.

It may interest you to know that, my father Chief Ochonu Onwe (Aluba) who brought me up was a custodian of Idoma history Agila inclusive.
Permit me sir, to educate you that, Ere-ononu, is not a festival hence can't be new yam festival. Ere-ononu is a cleansing ritual. Let me remind you sir, that, after Akatakpa festival, the Ere-ononu ritual is perform immediately, to chase away bad fortunes and sicknesses of Agila people. Ere-ononu ritual is perform by some elders, supervised by the Echo e'bi.
Sir, I hope you know that, some elders particularly the title holders, don't eat new yam until ujor is celebrated, also new yams are not expected or allowed to be sold in the Agila open market except ujor is celebrated.
Sir, ujor (the new yam festival), is a festival of great heroes, great farmers, wrestlers and warriors. What is remarkable in the ujor day is the Ikpa dance and Igbabom demonstration.
It is not all Etsogwus or title holders that perform the egbabam demonstration. And it should be noted that, only those who killed in war have the traditional right to dance the Ikpa dance.

Am never a candidate of argument. Presently we have modern history of Agila doctored for obvious reasons. I grew up with elders, know much of Agila traditions, took part in many traditional activities. Igbaba dance is also war demonstration dance. Ikpa is dance the A'onmotse group. During Igbaba dance you see the dancers holding okplewu, Okpaa and war related weapons demonstrating and pointing at directions of war victories.

Why are our elders now saying that Ere-ononu that is insignificant is now a new yam festival? Ere-ononu that is just a mere ritual of cleansing of evil perpetrated by Akatakpa and others, supervised by Echo e' bi is now our new yam festival? So our cultural extinction has gone to this level? Our culture is indeed finished! ...Christianity has not taken away our native names and the names of our localities...

... festival means egbe'dogwou in Agila. Check or consult elders, Ere-ononu is not on the list of Agila festivals. You can consult the book titled Idoma Nationality written by professor Eri.
